I am a freelance writer and editor specializing in public education. I spent more than a decade writing about urban schools for newspapers, and I now report from classrooms around the country for The Hechinger Report, an education news service at Columbia Teachers College that partners with mainstream media. I was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and a finalist for a Livingston Award for my coverage of Baltimore’s public schools at The Baltimore Sun, and my current series on a Newark school trying to reform has won numerous regional awards. I also teach yoga, which has made me well-versed on a variety of health and wellness topics. I have a journalism degree from Northwestern University, and I live in New York City.
